SNAME Workshop To Show How One Yard Increased Shop Productivity 50%

A 50 percent improvement in pipe fabrication shop productivity was achieved recently through improved work scheduling in a shipyard pilot project sponsored by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Panel SP-8 on Industrial Engineering. A one day workshop will be offered, at no charge, in five regional locations this April and May, which will describe the techniques that can be used to obtain similar results in any shop, in any shipyard.

The Scheduling Standards Pilot Project, carried out at Peterson Builders, Inc. in Sturgeon Bay, Wise., was designed as a real-world test of productivity improvements achievable through application of engineered labor standard data for work center loading and production scheduling. pipe fabrication shop was chosen for the test because it is a recently modernized, efficient facility with no apparent problems. The gratifying results of this effort were documented in a report which is available at no cost from the secretary of the panel.

The Scheduling Standards Workshop will demonstrate the proven dollar saving potential of using Scheduling Standards for planning and shop loading in shipyards. A discussion session will relate this technique directly to questions raised by participants. The day-long workshop sessions will be led by Rodney A.

Robinson, who directed the pilot project. Mr. Robinson, an executive staff member of Corporate- Tech Planning, Inc., has 30 years' experience in shipbuilding and shipyard management.
